Urgigga pinched the bridge of her nose and clenched her eyes shut. Her strength gathered, she leaned out her office door and roared:
"Ellu-Ḫari! My office! NOW!"
There was momentary shocked silence followed by a few snickers and childish "oooOOoo" jeers, as the assembled Mashers realised that Ellu-Ḫari must be in trouble with the bosswoman. Ellu-Ḫari resignedly trudged through the pen and into Urgigga's corner office. Standing to attention and making the sign of the mighty, he asked:
"Have there been complaints about my performance, honoured Director-General of Upholding Compliance?"
"No there bloody well haven't; that's the problem! Twelve years on the force and I ain't seen a single brutality complaint, not even an allegation of excessive force! And then today your latest performance review has multiple reports attesting to you thanking witnesses for their help! Thanking! One of them was wardum -- you expressed gratitude to a Khorne-damned wardum!!"
"But my liege, recent studies clearly show people cooperate more with Mashers when they feel their contributions are valued, and the Manual for Appropriate Deployment book clearly says we should follow an evidence-based-approach! It may not be politically correct, but if I'm to get unlicensed-murderers off the streets I need to show people courtesy, even wardum! And, respectfully, my clearance rate speaks for itself."
"Dammit, you're a tame card, Ellu-Ḫari! I don't deny you get results, but you can't keep playing by the rules like this! The department expects -- I expect -- our officers to display the utmost brutality at all times, and that means you have show a bit of rage on the job. There are powerful people out there theologically uncomfortable with the whole idea of preventing murders, licensed or not. We must reassure the public that we're still loyal servants of Khorne; we're not keeping the peace, we're just trying to ensure the greatest violence is done to the greatest number."
"Theology's above my ration-grade, ma'am; I'm just trying to keep our asteroid-belt the optimal level of unsafe."
"You might have the luxury of believing yourself above such things, but I got the thrice-cursed regional-comptroller so far up my arse on this you'd think he served the first impediment! I can't afford this kind of slip up. I'm going to have to insist on handing over your gun and badge."
"Really, you're going to do me like this?"
"You did this to yourself, Ellu-Ḫari! Now, take the weapons!"
Urgigga had gone to her desk and withdrawn a fresh laspistol and a small handaxe, popularly known as a "badge", since it was traditionally worn strapped across one's breast. She foisted them upon Ellu-Ḫari, who took a moment before begrudgingly accepting them.
"You know the drill, Ellu-Ḫari. The bloodmages have bewitched these weapons so that we'll get a real-time killcount from these. A logistician has been tasked with monitoring you and will alert me if you fall below a kill a day. You're on probation, kid. I expect results -- don't let me down. Now get the warp of my office!"
